“We are going to put in place some measures to contain social media,” the Inspector General of Police(IGP), John Kudalor has said.

The stakes are high in the 2016 elections and there are fears that social media could play out as a tool for destruction in the general polls slated for December 7.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), John Kudalor, has said containing social media to say the least will be a necessary option  if the need be for the Ghana Police Service to act against irresponsibility on social media platforms in the lead up to the polls.

The police administration threatened it would block social media on the eve and on elections day but the IGP’s comment was contrasted by President John Mahama some few months ago noting that social media will not be banned during the December 7 elections.

According to him, “Preventing access to social media such as Facebook will not solve the problem of policing the integrity of the ballot.” 

But the IGP who was interacting with some Muslim leaders in Accra on Monday October 24, maintained that the option to “contain” social media will be used when it becomes necessary.

He contended the measure will be employed to ensure a peaceful election process.

That notwithstanding he said “So far, so good…whether we will shut it down or not, I don’t want to go there, when we get to the bridge we will cross it but as at now, we have no intention to shut down social media if you continue to be good citizens.”
