Ex-Service men in the Ashanti Region are worried over the lack of attention from government with regard to their welfare.
The veterans have cited concerns including increment of their pension allowances, improvement of their health benefits and other incentives for pensioners.
Members of the Ghana Veterans Association raised the concerns when they joined their colleagues across the globe to celebrate the 72nd Remembrance Day Friday November 11, 2016.
The event, which was attended by veterans, personnel of the various security services, members of the Diplomatic Corps, traditional leaders, and some members of the general public, was climaxed with a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of the service men, who died during the world wars.
Deputy Ashanti Regional Chairperson of the Ghana Veterans Association, Ex W.O 1 George Appiah wants Government to address challenges confronting ex-service men. “Most of our veterans are not well but we don’t have better health facilities, the government should address our health needs for us.”
He also complained bitterly about their allowances saying, “when a veteran dies, his wife takes half of his pay but right now it takes a long time and it is something which is bothering us. When the widows come to us to complain, we don’t have anywhere to address these issues, our final authority is the headquarters but when it gets there, they say we should wait for the government there are no funds. That’s a very important issue and government should see to it that our widow’s pension are paid promptly for us”
Meanwhile the veterans are calling on Ghanaians to maintain the peace in the nation before, during and after the upcoming elections.
