VEEP Inaugurates Foreign Ministry Fire Probe

An eight member committee to investigate the inferno which destroyed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs last Wednesday was inaugurated yesterday, Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Castle, Osu, by Vice-President John Mahama. The committee, which is expected to submit its report and recommendations to government by Monday, November 30, is chaired by Mr Kweku Twum Boafo, an engineering consultant. Its terms of reference are: to enquire into the cause of the fire outbreak, to assess the responsiveness of the Ghana National Fire Service to the disaster, to assess the firefighting equipment at the Ministry. The committee will also probe the extent of damage caused by the fire; assess the loss of valuable documents and equipment; enquire whether there are adequate backup systems for the storage of important documents. The committee, which will sit at the conference room of the Public Services Commission, will also investigate any other matter incidental to or connected with the disaster. Inaugurating it, Vice President Mahama said the report of the committee would enable the government to establish standards to help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
