A Ford vehicle with registration number GE 3138-12 transporting passengers from Accra to Tarkwa rammed into the side of an articulator truck with registration number GE5873-13 at Kofikrom on the Tarkwa-Takoradi highway killing two people.
The dead include the Ford driver, Agyekum, 43 and another passenger who was on the front seat, Peter Kankam, 53.
Eleven other passengers who sustained various degree of injuries were sent to the Nsueam health centre and Tarkwa government hospital for medical attention.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency, Police Chief Inspector Stephen Yaw Toku, Station Officer in charge of Nsueam said on December 2, around 1430 hours his office received a distress call that an accident had occurred at Kofikrom in the Tarkwa Nsueam municipality.
Inspector Toku said he and his officers proceeded to the accident scene and on arrival gathered that the articulator truck fully loaded with bags of dried cocoa beans was heading towards Takoradi from Enchi.
He said while the Ford driver was negotiating a sharp curve he attempted to overtake a leading vehicle and in the process entered the truck’s lane.
Inspector Toku said the articulator driver who was about to descend a hill run into the bush to save the situation, but the Ford vehicle in the process hit the side of the truck, which resulted in the accident.
According to him, because the dead bodies were trapped in the vehicle, officers from the Ghana National Fire Service were invited to cut part of the truck before they were retrieved.
He said both bodies have since been deposited at the Tarkwa government hospital morgue for autopsy.
