Keep Abreast of Govt Policies - Prez

Functionaries of the government have been tasked to arm themselves with its policies and programmes to facilitate their easy dissemination among the electorate. The President, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, who gave the advice, said the ability of functionaries to educate themselves on the economic logic of government policies could go a long way to sustain the confidence and goodwill of the electorate in the government. President Mills, who was swearing in three new envoys at the Castle, Osu yesterday explained that it was important for the electorate to appreciate the rationale behind government policies in order to lend their support to the implementation of those policies. The envoys, who swore the Official Oath, the Oath of Secrecy and the Oath of Allegiance, were Mr Modestus Yawo Zebu Ahiable, for Benin; Mr John Maxwell Kwadjo, Togo, and Mr Robert Techie-Menson, India. According to the President, government functionaries should not behave defensively as if the government had something to hide from the people of Ghana who had given it the mandate to better their lives. He said the government had instituted a number of social and economic interventions intended to shape the economy, adding that the masses should be made aware of those interventions by the functionaries. He said the government was on course to transform the social and economic structures of the country and it was the duty of functionaries to disseminate that information to the electorate. According to President Mills, functionaries could also debunk misinformation being peddled about the government if they were well informed about its agenda to ensure quantitative and qualitative improvement in the living standards of the people.
