New Salary Levels Will Motivate Workers: Employment Minister

The Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Hon. Stephen Amoanor Kwao, says new salary levels which were agreed upon through negotiations between government and organized labour this year, will motivate workers to give off their best. He said the new salary levels will also make public sector employees loyal and committed to government to sustain the industrial peace in the country. The Minister made these remarks in Parliament when he answered a question by Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah, MP for Atwima Mponua. Hon. Asiamah asked the Minister to state when negotiations for wages and salaries for workers will be concluded in view of the high cost of living caused by the rise in fuel price. Hon. Stephen Amoanor Kwao said salary increases by government is based on external factors such as the impact of the global economic crisis on the economy and domestic factors such as the ability to pay the new salary levels and the need to avoid inflation. The Minister said government increased the salary of public sector workers by 17%, Health workers by 10% and the Members of the Ghana Medical Association by 10%.
