Asantehemaa's Funeral: Passengers Stranded

Scores of passengers travelling to Kumasi from Accra have been left stranded at the VVIP station in Accra as the drivers have abandoned their work.

The drivers on Monday, January 16, indicated that patronage of their services by passengers from Kumasi to Accra have recorded a sharp decline due to the ongoing funeral rites of the late queenmother of the Asante, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.

An official of VVIP in Accra, who spoke on anonymity, said: “Most of the cars are in Kumasi and according to them, there are no passengers in Kumasi, so all the buses are locked up there because of the funeral and it seems nobody is coming to Accra, so that’s why there are long queues here.”

The body of the queen was laid in state Monday 16 January, till her burial on Thursday, as part of final funeral rites being organised by Asanteman.

All the chiefs and traditional leaders in Asanteman paid their last respects to the longest-serving queenmother who died in November 2016 at 111 years.

The Asantehemaa’s four-day funeral started at midnight on Sunday January 15 at the Manhyia Palace.

The late mother of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will be buried on Thursday.
