Massive Welcome For Cardinal Turkson

A tumultuous crowd yesterday welcomed Cardinal Appiah Turkson to Cape Coast after his appointment as President of the Justice and Peace Committee of Catholic Church at the Vatican in Rome. As early as 3pm, they had lined-up at the Holy Child Senior High School Junction even though Cardinal Turkson was billed to arrive at 4.00pm. He, however, arrived from Accra at 4.45pm in an open car and was ushered into the town amidst drumming and dancing and brass band music. All activities in the town came to a halt, as people rushed to catch a glimpse of Cardinal Turkson who was immaculate in his official white robe with red belt and a red cap to match. He later paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene of the Ogua traditional area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II. The Omanhene said the elevation of Cardinal Turkson was a joyous occasion since it demonstrated the ability of the African to rise to higher levels. Osabarima Atta noted that the capability of Cardinal Turkson had been acknowledged by all. He expressed the Councils resolve to continue to pray for him to bring more laurels to the country and Africa in general. Osabarima Kwesi Atta later poured powder into the palm of Cardinal Turkson and presented him with a white cloth to signify his victory. On his part, Cardinal Turkson expressed his appreciation to the Chiefs and people for their support over the years. He promised to work hard to justify his elevation saying that he would no longer be in charge of the Cape Coast Arch-diocese of the Church. A bishop, he said, would be appointed to take over from where he left off. At the time of filing this story a church service was being held in his honour at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Cape Coast.
