Vetting Not Examination Ministers Should Pass...

Member of Parliament (MP) for Effia Constituency, Joseph Cudjoe, has indicated that Parliament's vetting process is not to evaluate the technical competence of minister- designates.

He says it is also not an examination where they would need to pass in order to become ministers, otherwise there would have been a pass mark.

The MP was replying critics who have argued that the Appointments Committee was needless and thus there could be better ways of vetting the appointees.

Two weeks ago, some critics argued that the normal select committees in Parliament which have specific roles in the various sectors of the economy should be the ones to vet the appointees selected to man those areas.

"For instance, the Select Committee on Mines and Energy should be the committee to vet the minister designate in charge of Energy and Petroleum in order to give way to relevant questions and to save time as well", Ebenezer Tei Larbi, MP for Lower Manya, suggested on Adom TV last two weeks.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the New Crusading GUIDE, Mr. Cudjoe, who is a member of the Appointments Committee, explained that his suggestion was not tenable because Parliament took special care in selecting them.

Aside drawing attention to the fact that his suggestion flouts the guidelines of the standing orders of Parliament, the Effia MP pointed out that, the Appointments Committee has people with diverse background to ask questions relating to environmental, legal, social, financial and other issues which are likely to arise in the course of the appointee's duty.

He, therefore, believes the current situation will have as much value as the various committees having to vet appointees in their area of focus.

He said the committee's job is to search for the general competence, general capabilities, general managerial skills and general fit for job in the area a minister designate has been appointed to occupy.
