Drivers Cry Over Fuel Price Increase

Barely a week after the increase of fuel prices by 5% which was announced by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Commercial drivers in the Greater Accra Region have lamented over the sudden increase. The new increases which have been communicated to the Oil Marketing Companies or (OMCs) follow hikes in crude oil prices on the world market, which hovers around $80 per barrel. Speaking to GO, some drivers underscored that there appears to be an artificial shortage of the commodity, alleging that some fuel stations have hoarded the commodity for purpose of making more profit. A forty-six year old driver at Kasoa Old Barrier, Mr Kofi Andoh, lamented that the Mills-led administration promised to reduce petrol but the latter has reneged on its promise make them to suffer. He added that they make lesser sales whenever there is an increase in petrol, saying, passengers dont really patronise their vehicles but rather a walk or sit in their family cars. Mr Kofi Andoh stressed that fights always ensue between them and passengers as the original price from the Drivers Union and the Ministry are sometimes different.
