Colourful Parade Marks 60th Independence Celebration In Ashanti

An impressive parade of school children and the security agencies marked the Ashanti Regional celebration of Ghana’s 60 years of nationhood.

On hand, to add more colour to the event, held under the theme, “Mobilizing for Ghana’s future” at the Jubilee Park, in Kumasi, were selected women and youth groups.

Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah, the Regional Minister, saluted the forefathers for their vision and sacrifices they made during the political independence struggle.

He encouraged everybody to be inspired by their selflessness and nationalism to recommit to the cause of the country’s socio-economic progress.

He said it was important for all to find space to contribute to the effort of making things better.
Mr. Osei-Mensah used the occasion to highlight the urgent need for the people to accept to work together to protect the environment – end the reckless destruction of the forest and water bodies.

“We are endangering the very survival of the beautiful and blessed land that our forefathers bequeathed to us. The dense forests that were home to varied trees, plants and fauna have largely disappeared.”

“Today, we import timber for use, and the description of our land as a tropical forest no longer fits the reality”, he noted.
Mr. Osei-Mensah said the anniversary should provide the opportunity to remind “ourselves about the need to radically change our attitude” towards the environment.
