Mr Samuel Otokounor Sackey, the Greater Accra Community Sports Table Tennis Coach has revealed to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) a 60 year old cup he received in school on the first day of Ghana’s Independence Day celebration in 1957.

The thin rimmed cup with a beautiful, round shape and a warm white glaze had the Coat of Arms engraved on it.

Speaking to the GNA in an interview, Mr Sackey said “On Wednesday March 6, 1957 at Bannerman Road Primary School, Accra, we were given this cup as part of the celebration of Ghana’s first Independence day. I was eight years old and in class three. Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah was the President.

“When I returned from school to our house in James Town (Accra), my father took the cup from my elder brother and I and locked it in his cupboard without any explanation to us.

“I treasure the cup because it gives me fond memories and anytime I show it to my age mate and the young ones they hail me for keeping the cup safe until this time because most of them do not have theirs as I speak.

“Each and every year March 6, I drink beer with this cup for relaxation and fond memories”, he said.

He therefore, congratulated Ghana as she marks her 60th anniversary and appealed to Ghanaians to help maintain the peace and continue to cherish the values of patriotism, enterprise, honesty and hard work as a ‘people of one nation with one destiny.’

Mr Sackey also urged the youth to keep their items and treasurable property safe for future references.

Mr Sackey is married and blessed with four children
