The Volta Region has scored the lowest points on the 2016 District League Table.
Though the Region’s average score went up by a percentage to 54 per cent in 2016 as compared to 2015, it was ranked 10th –last, on the regional league table.
Dr Archibald Letsa, Volta Regional Minister bemoaned the Region’s poor scores in the latest ranking by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
He called for the collective effort of all stakeholders to improve the Region’s performance in education, sanitation, rural water, health, security and governance; the indicators used in ranking districts across the country.
Dr Letsa called for a change in attitude and mindset, especially in the public sector, towards work and promised to avail resources to the districts.
Mr Dzradosi Charles, Social Policy Specialist, UNICEF, said it was time the Region was given more priority just like the three regions in the northern sector, because it was one of the most challenged in the country.
He said the index was a channel for policy makers to dialogue on how state resources should be allocated and issues addressed.
The Kpando District rose from 30th place in 2015 to 52nd in 2016 to become Volta Region’s highest ranking District and also scored highest in Open Defecation Free (ODF) with nine per cent.
The North Tongu District was ranked the least performing District nationwide.
The Region was also ranked second in the prevalence of teenage pregnancy after the Upper East Region with 18 districts scoring below 50 per cent in health.
