I would have Appointed Minister For Free SHS – Lecturer

Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana has described as apt the appointment of additional 54 ministers by President Akufo-Addo Wednesday.

Dr. Isaac Owusu Mensah said given the enormity work to be executed by the Akufo-Addo led administration, it is imperative to get many competent people to implement it effectively.

His comment is in reaction to objections raised by the majority of Ghanaians and opposition political parties about the size of the Akufo-Addo government.

This was after the President announced a list of 50 deputy Ministers and four (4) Ministers of state, bringing the total number of Ministerial appointees in the government to 110.

Some of the Ministries especially Agriculture, Information, Energy and Local Government, have been assigned three (3) deputy Ministers with others having two deputy Ministers.

Sections of Ghanaians have taken to social media to register their displeasure with the decision christening it “the biggest government in the history of the country.”

But Dr. Owusu Mensah in an interview on Adom News said the concerns being raised are misplaced.

He explained that considering the projects government has to execute, President Akufo-Addo should have even appointed more ministers.

The Political Science lecturer said if he was the President of Ghana, “ I will appoint a Minister of State in charge of the one-district-one factory and another Minister in charge of free secondary education to fulfill the political objectives of the party”.

What Ghanaians should be looking at, Dr. Owusu Mensah stressed is the output which is more important than the number of ministers since President Akufo-Addo would be judged based on work done after four years.
