Tragedy Looms As Pupils Study In Death Trap Classroom

Amanase Aboabo District Assembly (D/A) Junior High School (JHS) in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region, which was established in the 1920s, has now become a death trap.

A visit to the school by Today revealed the deplorable nature of the school building which had already seen the Form Three block caved in.

Today gathered that the pupils close early from school whenever the rains are about to fall.

Speaking to Today in an interview, some of the pupils and staff members expressed fear over the weak nature of the building they occupy. They therefore appealed to government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), corporate entities and individuals to immediately come to their aid.

“Now under this tree is our Staff Common Room, where all activities such as marking of class exercises and exam papers among others take place,” some of the teachers who spoke on conditions of anonymity said.

Aside from that, the teachers said their teaching and learning materials were kept in an erected roofing sheet office.

“We are not happy with the dilapidated structure of the school. Several lives will be lost in the coming days if nothing is done about the situation,” the teachers cautioned.

A female pupil of the school told Today that “there have been several occasions that we the pupils have had to battle with snakes for our lives,” she expressed.

According to her, they always get frightened whenever it is about to rain.
