Regional Chairmen Caused Our Defeat

Northern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sofo Azorka, has rubbished claims that ex-President Mahama’s incompetence caused the party’s defeat in the 2016 General Elections.

According to him, all those pointing accusing fingers at the immediate past President are either confused or being economical with the truth.

Rather, Sofo Azorka wants the defeat blame to be put on all the regional and constituency chairmen as well as the other executives, and foot soldiers for their inability to go the extra mile in their duties to retain President Mahama on the seat.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s ‘Ekosii Sen’ program yesterday , Chairman Azorka said the greed of some national and other executives who pocketed monies meant for party work caused the defeat.

“Because if the monies reached us, we would have worked harder than we did to retain the party in power”, he sneered.

He accused some of MPs, especially the Yunyoo MP of refusing to allow the monies to touch the grassroots but working in isolation without help from chairpersons or any executive.

“The ex-President saw to the disbursement of the monies at the national level, trusting that they would have reached down to be used for the work intended. But he isn’t an angel to fly to every constituency to check whether the money was used or not, so he should be left out of the blame game”, he stated.

He wondered why someone like Joseph Bipoba would describe former President Mahama as incompetent and warn against his 2020 bid when in his constituency, he got 7, 000 votes while the latter garnered 15, 000 votes.

Chairman Azorka swore to support him (Mahama) if he surfaces in the 2020 elections as the party’s candidate and called everyone to keep quiet about the party and support their candidate too.

He averred that the situation the party finds itself currently called for re-strategizing and plans on how to capture power in 2020.

Ever since the humiliating defeat in the last held General Elections, party members of the umbrella group have raised different issues as to the cause of the party’s defeat, with some other bigwigs accusing the ex-President of being the chief cause.

Notable among bigwigs is Joseph Naabu Bipoba, Member of Parliament (MP) for Yunyoo who has minced no words in describing him ex-President) as incompetent and surrounding himself with young inexperienced people who had little political experience when he(Mahama) was in power.

He cited former Communications Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah as one of the "inexperienced" people who were appointed into the previous government.

Dr. Kwabena Agyei, a former party Chairman while agreeing with the MP to some point also accused delegates for the defeat because they voted him out when he had the key to retain the party in power.

Former National Organiser of the part, Mr. Yaw Boateng Gyan, is also pointing accusing fingers at some of the national executives whom he claims lined their pockets with campaign party monies instead of sending it down the grassroots to work for the party.

After their separate submissions, a cross section of the umbrella party members who also believe in the competence of the former President have subjected the ‘naysayers’ to heavy criticisms, declaring their full support for him ahead of the 2020 elections.
