Gov’t Will Support Kwesi Appiah To Succeed- Sports Minister

Youth and Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is ready to support Kwesi Appiah to succeed as the head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars.

The former Ghana Black Stars skipper's re-appointment was confirmed on Tuesday April 4 by the Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Mr Asiamah, during his vetting as Sports Minister-designate, called for a local coach when quizzed on his preferred candidate for the technical direction of the senior national team.

Speaking to the media during his tour of the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex on Tuesday 11 April, he re-echoed his support for a local coach and revealed government’s readiness to ensure Appiah succeeds at his job.

"At my vetting I did speak about the need to have a local coach and as a proud Ghanaian I believe in the capacity of the Ghanaian. Over the years, our Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) successes have been chalked with Ghanaian coaches and with a capable man like Kwesi Appiah who qualified the nation to the 2014 World Cup. …We as government will support him with all the resources he will need to function as a coach. He will be supported adequately to perform the function of a national team coach,” he stated.

Appiah is expected to officially begin work on May 1.
