In the view of TNF, our attitude towards time and time management have contributed largely to our disrespect for laws, values, and any sense of urgency to work.

 

One sure way we can positively affect this disrespect for time is to introduce a viable, efficient and time-bound public transport system by road and rail. It is good that we have revamped the State owned transport company STC. It is refreshing that efforts are seriously underway to revamp the railway sector in a commercial and long-range distance coverage.

 

If we have a duty to catch a bus or train to get to work at a particular time people would fear losing their jobs thus losing their wherewithal to make life better. If one is sacked for attending to work or office duties late on three consecutive times it would serve as a deterrent to all others. If we begin State programmes on time whether or not the special guests are in it would serve notice for our leaders and populace to be on their guard.

 

The issues of time are so crucial that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed it in his famous letter from the Birmingham Jail:

 

It is the strangely irrational notion that there is something in the very flow of time that will inevitably cure all ills. Actually, time is neutral. It can be used either destructively or constructively.

 

I am coming to feel that the people of ill will have used time much more effectively than the people of good will.

 

We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people.

 

We must come to see that human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and persistent work of men willing to be co-workers with God, and without this hard work time itself becomes an ally of the forces of social stagnation.
