Smoking habits among teens, specially girls has been a worry over the years - In an attempt to curb the canker and rather inspire confident in young women, a movement by SKY Girls has been established.

Dubbed Tobacco-Free Generation, SKY Girls Ghana will tutor girls on the need to abstain from using tobacco when they officially launch their educative campaign with a massive concert on the 29th of April at the Aviation Social Centre at 1pm prompt.

The two-year campaign will be funded by renowned Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and carried out by a consultancy agency, Now Available Africa.

The agency has been charged to create an exciting but impactful programme tailored to the needs and interest of teenage girls in Ghana.

Even though Ghana has had one of the lowest rates of tobacco usage in Africa, the situation is gradually changing in recent times.

In reference to the latest Global Tobacco Survey, 10.6% of girls aged 13-15 currently seem to use tobacco in some form. On the other hand, shisha is continuously being marketed as the sophisticated and cool habit of the youth.

This trend is what the Gates Foundation together with Good Business are hoping to curb before it get beyond control.

Ghana is the third country in Africa the SKY Girls anti-tobacco campaign has been launched and according to the Director of Business Development for Available Africa, Venus Tawiah, they will work vigorously to help curb smoking mainly among girls in Ghana.

SKY also encourages girls to be clear on their values and then supports them in staying true to who they are including their wish to stay clear of smoking.

Teens can join the SKY Girls world on all the various social media platforms as well as on radio and yet tolaunch magazine.

This will ensure that the girls have a comprehensive support system to help them stay true to themselves and become the best they can be. The initiative has support from the Christian Council.
