Residents living around ITC at Garu in the Garu-Tempane District of the Upper East Region are still wondering what might have pushed a female police officer, Peace Agbemefo, to shoot herself on Monday.
Constable Peace Agbemefo was alleged to have committed suicide at her station.
The police officer, aged about 33 and stationed at the Garu Police Station, was reportedly found on Monday lying lifeless in a pool of blood in her room, a few meters away from the police station.
She’s suspected to have shot herself through her neck into the head, with her service gun – AK-47.
The incident is said to have occurred in the afternoon when the police woman, who was supposed to report at her duty post – GN Bank – failed to do so.
The District Commander, ASP Alexander Tieku, was quoted as saying that the incident happened between 1.30 pm and 2:00 pm.
She had reportedly booked for her gun at about 6:30 am and was expected to report at her assigned duty post, but failed to do so, according to police sources.
Towards the afternoon on that day, the Bank Manager, Haruna Abdul-Fataw, according to a local journalist, came out and realized that there was no police presence at the bank and so he called the police station to ask for police protection.
At that point, officers at the station reportedly started wondering where the female police officer might be, especially when she had been assigned to the bank, and had also reported at the station early enough to book for a gun.
According to the local journalist, a young lady who always visited Constable Peace Agbemefo to help in her daily chores, was the one who raised alarm over her death and attracted people to the scene.
The young lady (name withheld) had gone to look for Constable Agbemefo at her residence in the afternoon, but realized the door was locked.
According to her, the deceased had asked her Sunday evening to come for food that Monday afternoon, and so when she realized that the door was locked, she assumed the police woman had gone to work and so went home.
She said she came back with a spare key the deceased had given her.
She maintained that she opened the door and saw Constable Agbemefo lying in a pool of blood.
The deceased fired the shot through her neck into the head. There was a rope hanging close to her from the ceiling, as well as a knife which was lying close to her body. There was no note at the scene, the lady said.
The body has since been deposited at the mortuary of the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.
