Man Jailed 15 Years For Robbing KNUST Students

An Accra Circuit Court on Thursday handed a 15-year jail sentence to one Kwame Asong, for robbing two persons of their three mobile phones, backpack, one purse and an amount of GHc250.00.

Kwame pleaded not guilty, but after trial, was found guilty by the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh.

He is to serve 15 years in prison with hard labour to serve as a deterrent to other young people who have resorted to cheap means of acquiring wealth. In sentencing, the court said it took into consideration the convict’s plea for mitigation, the period spent in custody.

Earlier, the prosecution, Chief Superintendent of Police, Duuti Tuaruka, told the court that the complainants in the case were students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), but reside at Kasoa ,while Kwame is a fisherman who resides at Oshiyie, near Kokrobite in Accra.

He said on July 10, 2016, the two students visited the Oshiyie beach to have fun and while on their way back home, Kwame and two others attacked them. “Armed with a beer bottle, they subjected the students to severe beatings and robbed them of their items and bolted,’’ he said.

The prosecution said they robbed them of two mobile phones worth GH¢400, one backpack worth GH¢25 and GH¢250 cash.

Chief Superintendent Tuaruka said the complainants raised an alarm and with the help of others at the beach, the convict was apprehended after a chase, but his accomplices managed to escape.

He was handed over to the police and during investigations; the three mobile phones and the purse were retrieved.
