More than 300 Ghanaians have voluntarily repatriated to Ghana from Libya following what they describe as a breakdown of law and order in the country.

According to them, life in Libya has become unbearable in the past few years since the death of Muammar Gaddafi, the country's former president who was ousted from office and killed in 2011.

Many of the people who had left Ghana to seek pastures new in Libya say they have regretted the voyage advising the youth to stick to life in Ghana saying the prospects in the country are much brighter than what exists elsewhere.

One said, ‘I have regretted going to Libya. Life there is very difficult. There are robbers who robbed us at a gun point every day. When you report to the authorities, they don’t do anything about it’.

Some of the returnees who admitted travelling to Libya on foot through the Libyan desert noted that they were disappointed at the lawless state of Libya coupled with hardship, urging other Ghanaians to dismiss any thought of moving to the country.

They are calling on the government of Ghana to do whatever it takes to bring back home scores of Ghanaians in Libya who wish to return to their motherland but are unable to do so due to the lack of funds.

‘We are pleading with government to save our brothers left behind in Libya’ another returnee asserted.

Three people are reported to have died while camping for a flight to convey them back to Ghana.
