3 Volta DCEs Approved, One Rejected

Three Municipal and District Executives (MDCE) nominees out of five who constitute the first batch of 25 nominees in the Volta Region have been approved by their respective Assemblies.

Per the itinerary of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, confirmation of nominees would take place from 8-16 May 2017.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archiebald Letsa is in charge of the Central and Southern Volta, while his deputy, Maxwell Blagogee, would supervise the Northern sector.

At North Dayi, the assembly members overwhelmingly approved Kudjo Edmund Attah, who received 100 percent votes from all 34 assembly members.

Mr. Attah, who is the chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the North Dayi, becomes the second District Chief Executive (DCE) of the young district.

His unanimous confirmation did not come as a surprise to many people in the area.

In his maiden speech, the new DCE called for collaboration from all the assembly members and indigenes of the area to effectively develop the district effectively.

He pledged to make education his topmost priority in the area.

The MP for the area, Joycelyn Tetteh, pledged her unflinching support for the DCE.

In the Ketu South Municipality, the MCE nominee, Edem Eliot Agbewornu, was also confirmed by the assembly members of the area.

He polled 53 votes out of the 56 votes cast, representing 93 percent while three assembly members, representing seven percent voted against him.

Seth Yornewu of the Keta Municipal was also confirmed by members of the assembly after he obtained 56 votes out of the 70 votes cast, representing 80 percent.

Meanwhile, members of the Kpando District Assembly rejected the President’s nominee for the area.

Mr. Elvis Kwaku Djampoh failed to secure two-thirds of the total votes cast by polling 15 votes out of 28 votes cast, representing 54 percent, which is less than the mandated 67 percent of the total votes.

He would therefore be presented to the assembly members again in 10 days’ time for another election.

The Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr. Maxwell Blagogee, who was disappointed at the turn of events, appealed to the assembly members to reconsider their decision when the nominee is presented to them again.

According to Mr. Blagogee, development projects cannot be executed in the area without a substantive DCE, who is the representative of the president at the local level.

The Volta Regional Minister, on his part, urged the President’s nominee to justify the confidence reposed in them by the President, adding that their actions and inactions would have an effect on many aspects of the country.
