Prof. Agyekum Condemns Mob Attacks On Security Personnel

Professor Agyekum, Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, has condemned the mob attack on a Police station at Somanya in the Eastern Region.

The attack which happened on Monday saw residents of Somanya vandalizing the Police station and setting a Police car into flames.

But for the timely intervention of a Military and Police reinforcement team, law and order was restored in the area.

Addressing the issue on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', Professor Agyekum expressed disappointment in the residents and further condemned any act of violence in the country.

According to him, it appears that today's generation does not regard the laws of the State, hence meting out instant justice once offended.

He wondered how the residents could mobilize themselves and boldly attack the Police personnel. To him, the attack was perhaps premeditated by the mob and so sternly warned the youth to be cautious of their actions.

Touching on the lynching of a Military officer, Capt. MA Mahama of 5 Battalion of Infantry, Professor Agyekum called for the laws to take its course on the perpetrators.

The Captain was lynched by residents of Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region while he was jogging at about 8:30 am on Monday, May 29, 2017.

According to reports, the residents mistook the officer for an armed robber and lynched him.

Professor Agyekum raised concerns over the action by the residents, wondering why they failed to send the suspect to the Police but rather decided to lynch him.

He held strongly that the lawlessness by the generation of today is disturbing.

He noted that the partisan politics played by the leaders in the country contribute to the violent tendencies in the citizenry, who also hide in their political clothing to commit a wrongdoing with the hope of being set free.

He therefore advised the government, State authorities and politicians not to interfere when people are arrested for committing a crime or violence but allow the country's laws to operate.
