The Member of Parliament for the Asunafo South constituency in the Brong Ahafo Region and minority spokesperson on Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has asked government to compensate farmers whose farms were affected by the army worms.

According to him, some of these farmers invested a lot of money into their farms hence it is not enough to just give out GHc16 million to deal with the army worms.

“…how do we deal with the losses of the affected farmers? They have invested resources. Some went to the banks to borrow and invest these monies in their farming activities...we have to commit part of these resources to compensate for the losses of the affected farmers to serve as a motivation so that next year, these same people will be encouraged to go into farming..." he said in an interview on Citi FM, Friday.

The fall armyworms were detected in 2016 and has so far destroyed about 18,219.07 hectares of maize farms as at Friday May 26, 2017.

So far, nine regions have been affected with farmers losing hundreds of thousands of Cedis of investment.
