June 3 Remembrance Day Waste Of Money - Victim

Mr Guster Razak blessing, a victim of June 3 disaster A VICTIM of June 3 fire and rain disaster which occurred in 2015, Mr Guster Razak Blessing, has said that the yearly remembrance day celebration of the disaster is unnecessary and not relevant either.

Speaking to the DAILY HERITAGE in Accra on Saturday, Mr Blessing said the monies and resources used in the celebration could be channelled into their welfare, which to him, would be more beneficial to the victims. “We are the people who suffered from the burns but have survived. The burns have taken something precious out of my life as I am no more the same as I was two years ago.

“My fellow victims were having meaningful jobs in the Ghana Police Service, in the Ghana Armed Forces, banks and other institutions but some have been laid off due to their physical challenges while others have been demoted to other departments at their various workplaces,” Mr Blessing stated.

The victim, who is a former student of Kumasi Senior High School, said the victims were facing rejection within the communities they live in, which has tarnished their status and eroded their confidence.

“The government should find something for the victims and also look for meaningful employment for them. There were a lot of people, especially ladies, who were traders doing their own businesses but because of their disfigured bodies, when they go to the market to sell nobody buys their wares,” he further stated.

“Our welfare should be the concern of the government before they embark on this Remembrance Day celebration. The ceremony is just a waste of money. I am really disappointed in the government because some of us are yet to receive our compensation from the government,” Blessing said.

He complained that they were told to go to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for surgery for free, “but when we went there we heard a different story which indicated that we had to bear the cost and not the government.”

Saturday marked the second anniversary of the fire and rain disaster in which some people were killed by a fire outbreak at the GOIL filling station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
