The General Secretary of the Word Miracle Church International (WMCI), Bishop Hansel Agyei Frimpong, who was arrested by the Greater Accra Regional Police for his alleged involvement in Monday's tragic incident where two persons lost their lives at Avenor, a suburb of Accra, has been released.
He was given police enquiry bail and subsequently released at about 5pm today, Tuesday (Nov 17th), but will be processed for court tomorrow, barring any unforeseen eventualities.
The legal counsel of the church, Lawyer Agyei Lartey, confirmed the latest happenings in an exclusive interview on PEACEFM during the 6pm bulletin.
The police had invited the leadership of the church for questioning to ascertain the truth in the allegation that the church had organised some landguards, to carry out an exercise in the area which is mostly occupied by people suspected to be squatters.
A high-powered delegation from the church, led by its General Secretary, Bishop Hansel Agyei Frimpong, who is also the Presiding Bishop of the Circle Branch of the WMCI, yesterday (Monday) went to the Greater Accra Police Command to answer questions concerning the incident.
He was, however, detained whiles the other members of the delegation were asked to go home.
Two persons lost their lives tragically following the indiscriminate firing of firearms by both sides. One of the alleged landguards, who died in the process, had his left limb chopped off at the elbow. The identity of the other dead person is yet to be confirmed as some eyewitnesses claimed that he was a passerby, while others say he was a resident. He was said to have died at the hospital.
The church and the supposed squatters have given different accounts of what led to the shooting incident.
While the squatters accuse the church of sending armed landguards to the place to attack them, the church also claims it was the residents who started shooting at their workers who had gone to the site to work, and that they had not engaged the services of any landguards.
