Gov't asked to support development of art

Mr Edward Appiah, a lecturer at the Communication Design Department, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has appealed to government to appreciate the role of art and culture in Ghana's development. He said African traditional art has a lot to offer in the area of design concepts, which must be fully explored to aid the country's industrialization. Mr Appiah was presenting a paper on: "African Art, Product Design: nexus of industrialization" at KNUST on Thursday. He said it was a paradox that when African art has become popular with Europeans, Africans themselves were yet to exploit the potential fully for the benefit of the continent. Mr Appiah said "The Europeans now rely on the creative expertise of the African artists and craftsmen to promulgate their own concepts in Africa." He said the content and form of African Art was still basis for communicative symbolism and should be made be to become more functional.
