THREE drivers have been fined a total of GH¢5,600 by the Tarkwa High Court for various driving offences.
Baba Abdulai was fined GH¢840 last Friday for causing harm to one Francis Ganyo, now deceased; Abdulai Fuseini, 39, was fined GH¢3,000 for negligently causing harm, careless and inconsiderate driving earlier in the week while 34-year-old Kwasi Gyan was fined GH¢1,800 for causing harm, careless and inconsiderate driving.
Prosecuting the first case, Police Chief Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman told the court that on December 13, last year, the convict was driving a Kia Rio taxi cab with registration number GE 8857-16 from Asankragwa towards Dunkwa with passengers on board.
On reaching a section of the road, prosecution said Abdulai knocked down Francis Ganyo, aged 36, who crossed the road from the left side to the right.
She said Abdulai conveyed Ganyo to the Catholic Hospital at Asankragwa in his vehicle for treatment, but he died the following day while on admission.
Chief Inspector Anaman said on December 23, last year, the convict was arraigned before the District Magistrate’s Court in Asankragwa and was sentenced to a fine GH¢840 for careless and inconsiderate driving, which he paid.
She said a duplicate docket was, however, prepared and forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Office at Sekondi for study and advice in respect to the deceased.
Prosecution said a letter was received from the law office with the advice to charge the accused person with the offence.
In the second case, Police Chief Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman told the court, presided over by Mr Emmanuel Bart-Plange Brew, that on March 18, at 2030 hrs, the convict, Abdulai Fuseini, who was holding a temporary license, was driving a Mercedes Benz sprinter bus with registration number GN 4269-14 with passengers on board from Kumasi towards Enchi in the Western Region.
She said on reaching a section of the road at the National Health Insurance Scheme office at Asankragwa, the vehicle knocked down one Ibrahim Abam, 41, who was walking along the road.
Chief Inspector Anaman said the victim sustained injuries and was taken to the Catholic Hospital at Asankragwa, where he died four days after admission.
She said a post-mortem examination conducted on the deceasedindicated that he died out of head injuries.
The prosecutor said during investigation it was detected that the brake, steering, gears and electrical systems of the accident vehicle were found to be in good condition.
Prosecuting the third case, Chief Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman told the court that on November 5, last year, at about 1130 hrs, Kwesi Gyan was driving a Nissan caravan mini bus with registration number AW 5790-14 from Sefwi Bekwai with 15 passengers on board towards Asankragwa.
She said on reaching a spot shortly after Beposo town, the convict lost control of the vehicle, which somersaulted in the process. David Agbeko, 38, Kofi Gyetuah, 39, Kwame Antwi, 73, and Margaret Bio, 60, died on the spot.
Chief Inspector Anaman said 11 others, including the convict, sustained injuries and were rushed to the Green Shield Hospital at Sefwi Bekwai for treatment.
She said all the victims were treated and discharged the same day.
The prosecution said investigations revealed the cause of deaths as severe head injuries, chest and hemorrhagic shock.
