Akufo-Addo Has Done No Wrong - Former Nkrumah MP

Former Member of Parliament for the people of Brong Ahafo on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) under ex-President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's regime, Madam Lucy Animwaa Annin says there is nothing wrong on the part of President Akufo-Addo to propose September 21 as Nkrumah Memorial Day and August 4 as Founders’ Day.

According to her, President Akufo-Addo is the new King of Ghana and he is entitled to making new laws in the country, thus even twins have different mindsets in dealing with issues, and the President is no exception proposing changes in the Founding fathers' of the country.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Madam Lucy Animwaa Annin averred that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah did his part in the struggle for the Independence of the country and added his quota to the development as well.

She rather stressed that her problem has to do with the fact that Ghanaians do not know their history.

“It is not bad and what I want to say is that new King, new law; in this world, even twins have their differences in ideologies and so if Nana Akufo-Addo has proposed this, it is not bad. What I know is that Kwame Nkrumah did his part in the struggle for our Independence and added his quota to the development of the country,” she stated.

“What bothers me in Ghana is that we don’t know our history and we don’t teach our children the history of this country. Since Kwame Nkrumah came and what he did for the country, we have to teach our children. We also have to teach our children what Kotoka did in this country; the history surrounding Busia, Acheampong, Limann and Rawlings’ June 4 must be taught for our children to know and this will bring understanding in the country,” she stressed.

She emphasized that insofar as “we always talk and make noise about this, our children still don’t know our history, the children don’t even know that we used to produce our own sugar in this country”.

Madam Lucy Animwaa Annin without going into the Founders’ Day brouhaha insisted that Ghana has lost focus in moving from the colonial mentalities as “we still engage in buying and selling instead of producing on our own”.

“I am not going to talk about Founders’ Day brouhaha; new King, new law . . all I want to say is that we should let Ghanaian children learn our history and know which is which as this is what will help us to move forward,” she maintained.

President Akufo-Addo in attempt to include all the players in the struggle for the country’s Independence, has proposed legislation to Parliament to designate 4th August as Founders’ Day, and 21st September as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, both of which will be observed as public holidays.

In the meantime, the President has issued an Executive Instrument to commemorate this year’s celebration of Founders' Day as a public holiday.
