The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, the Most Reverend Titus Awotwi-Pratt, has called for state institutions to be fearless in the enforcement on safety regulations.

This comes in the wake of the gas explosion at the Atomic Junction, Madina, which claimed seven lives and left in excess of 130 others hurt.

He said Ghanaians could not continue to perish and to see property destroyed through recurring gas explosion and flooding because of the inaction of some public officials.

“We as a church believe that these disasters can be prevented if those charged to make sure that the right things are done, diligently carry out their duties.”

The Most Rev Awotwi-Pratt was delivering the sermon at the induction service held for the newly-elected Lay President, Mr. Bernard Clement Kwasi Botwe, at the Adum Wesley Cathedral in Kumasi.

He urged the government to sanction any official, whose acts of omission or commission resulted in preventable loss of lives and property.

That, he indicated, was the way to go to get everybody to perform their assigned tasks with passion and dedication.

Mr. Botwe, replaces Mr. Kwame Boafo, and would serve for a three-year term.

Until his induction, he was an active synod and conference member and served on the church’s advisory committees on finance and development, social services, education and youth development.

He played key role in the preparatory works towards the creation of the Wenchi Diocese out of the Sunyani Diocese, and was also the immediate past Chairman of the Connexional Council of Patrons for the Methodist Guild.

The Most Rev Awotwi-Pratt urged the new Lay President to continue to work hard to grow the church - help to build on its internal structures to enhance the spread of the gospel, promote education, health and youth development.

He encouraged him to work closely with his predecessor to ensure continuity in the church’s socio-economic and income-generation ventures.

Mr. Botwe pledged not to disappoint and asked for the support and cooperation of everybody.
