The Akuafo Hall of the University of Ghana on Tuesday honoured about 62 National Best Farmers and Fishermen award winners at a durbar in Accra. The farmers comprised four each from the Upper West; Upper East; and Central regions; five from the Volta region; seven each from Brong Ahafo, Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Greater Accra regions and 10 from the Northern Region. The National Best Farmer and Fishermen Award 2009 is on the theme: "Accelerated Agricultural Modernisation for Food Security and economic Transformation," would be held in Tamale in the Northern Region on Friday, December 4. The nominees were all presented with a special souvenir recognising their contribution to the development and growth of the agricultural sector and the hall. Professor Benjamin Kwadwo Ahunu, Provost, College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences outlined the edifice the Hall had over the years erected to honour the nation's farmers and fishermen. The edifice includes a fountain, a female and male giant burst, and the creation of a decorated board with the names of all the award winners inscribed on it. He said the Best farmer and Fisherman was also inducted into fellowship of the Hall. The Reverend Dr W. S. K. Gbewonyo Akuafo Hall Master expressed gratitude to the nations farmers and fishermen for their contribution to national development. He said the nations farmers contributed seed money for the establishment of the University of Ghana in 1948 and applauded their achievement and continuous support to education. Rev Gbewonyo said the Hall was mobilising resources to build a four- story complex to meet the large inflow of students.
