GRIDCo to repair faulty electric equipment

Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) announced on Thursday that it would take out of service a number of transmission lines and equipment at its substations in December to enable its contractors to undertake various works and to repair defective equipment. The company said it has, therefore, requested the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to take out service to consumers in Accra as and when required. A statement issued by GRIDCo in Accra signed by Mr Albert Kwesi Quainoo, Head of Public Relations, said the first of these works would commence at 0800 hours on December 5 and end at 1600 hours on December 6, 2009 when GRIDCo takes out one of the transmission lines running from Tema Switchyard to the Achimota Substation. It said this was to provide safe working space for the contractor stringing the new 330kV transmission lines across the existing Tema/Achimota lines at Adjei Kojo near Ashiaman. "Under this condition and barring any unforeseen developments, the remaining transmission lines from Tema to Achimota will not be able to carry the entire power requirement for Accra." "Power supply will, therefore be reduced by about 20 per cent during the peak period 1800 hours and 2200 hours on Saturday, December 6, 2009, to prevent the two lines from getting overloaded." The statement said GRIDCo was also undertaking various maintenance works including the repair of defective disconnect switches and line terminations at various substations. These works are not expected to affect supply to customer supply, GRIDCo said.
