Farmers Wounded At Koforidua Farmers’ Day

SOME FARMERS who were in a rush to exchange foodstuffs with cutlasses were wounded during last Friday’s celebration of the National Farmers’ Day in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital.

A 60-year-old farmer, Sisi Mensah, was severely injured and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the organisers asked the farmers to come and exhibit their produce to make the day a success, as had been the practice every year.

But to the surprise of the farmers, the organisers rather asked them to exchange their produce for cutlasses.

The decision angered the farmers who rushed on a Kia truck with registration number GN 3324 -12, belonging to the New Juaben Municipal Assembly – that was carrying the cutlasses.

In the course of the stampede, several farmers, including the old lady, sustained injuries.

The angry farmers accused the organisers of cheating them by giving them a cutlass each for their (farmers’) expensive foodstuffs.

Officials who feared being attacked escaped the scene.
