Kufuor, Lady Julia Console Otumfuo

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor and Lady Julia, wife of the Asantehene, consoled Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Sunday following the death of his mother Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, after short illness in 2016.

Traditional leaders, politicians and the clergy and thousands of people consoled Otumfuo on the third-day of the two-week funeral.

Former President Kufuor and Lady Julia were given the opportunity to pay homage to the Asantehene who sat in state.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah and the Kumasi Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, as well as scores of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), were also present.

Former and present ministers of state and mourners from all walks of life were also at the forecourt of the Manhyia Palace to mourn the death of Asantehema.

Otumfuo’s Arrival

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who was dressed in black cloth, arrived at the venue in a palanquin amidst drumming and dancing, as well as firing of musketry.

He was carried through the durbar grounds before he finally took his seat for the mourners to pay homage to him.

The large number of people that followed the Asantehene to the venue sang war songs to show their mournful mood.

The event was also characterized by the firing of musketry from all corners, which caused fear and panic among the people.

Virtually all the chiefs were welcomed to the venue with several gunshots.

The gunshots intensified when the Bantamahene Baffuor Owusu Amankwatia, who is the traditional war leader of the Asantehene, got to the scene in the company of armed young men.

The firing of musketry reached its crescendo when Otumfuo Osei Tutu II got to the forecourt of Manhyia Palace.
