KMA Declares War On Stray Animals

Any stray animal that will be seen roaming the streets of Kumasi or open areas in the city during the grand funeral of the Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, will be apprehended.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s (KMA) by-laws clearly prohibit the movement of stray animals in the city and the assembly is determined to enforce the law to the letter, henceforth.

Mr. Godwin Okumah Nyame, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of KMA, in a news release, said the activities of stray animals usually lead to the spread of diseases, road accidents and also make the city dirty.

He said KMA wants Kumasi to look beautiful in order to send a positive message to thousands of foreigners that would be visiting the city in the next two weeks for the funeral of the Asantehemaa, which started on Friday, December 1.

Mr. Okumah Nyame therefore warned that any stray animal that would be seen roaming the streets or in open areas of the city, would be caught and auctioned, adding that owners of such animals would also be punished by law.

He also announced that there will be a massive clean-up exercise across the Kumasi Metropolis on Saturday to keep the city clean, ahead of the grand funeral of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.

“The Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC), made up of some powerful and prominent chiefs in Asanteman, is collaborating with KMA, led by Mr Osei Assibey Antwi, the Kumasi Mayor, to clean the city”, he said.

The clean-up exercise is expected to start at all the sub-metros in Kumasi from 6am to 9am, Mr. Godwin Okumah Nyame, said, urging residents of the city to patronize the exercise.

According to him, the late Asante Queen’s funeral would certainly attract scores of top dignitaries from other areas of the country, Africa and the world at large, hence the need for Kumasi to be kept clean and beautiful.

The KMA PRO admonished commercial car drivers not to ply the streets of areas that have been selected for the clean-up exercise, urging all and sundry to fully participate in the clean-up exercise to make Kumasi look attractive.
