KUMACA Deaths: Panicky Parents Besiege School

Some parents and guardians who have their wards at the Kumasi Academy (KUMACA) school in the Ashanti Region marched to the school premises on Tuesday, December 5 to take their children home.

The siege by the parents follows the unexplained death of six students with 25 others currently on admission. This resulted in a stand-off between the parents and school authorities who refused access to the pupils in the school.

Even though the cause of the outbreak is not known, authorities suspect meningitis. Health authorities have hinted of vaccination for the students before being allowed to go home.

Meanwhile, government has been urged to declare a state of emergency following the unexplained deaths. Commenting on this development on his Facebook page on Tuesday December 5, Prof Asare said: “With 7 students dead this year, 3 in the last 72 hours, it is time to declare a state of emergency at KUMACA.”

Blood samples from the deceased have, however, been sent to the Noguchi Memorial Research Institute to ascertain the cause of the deaths.
