Palmwine Tapper Slashes Wife

The people of Agona Gyasekrom in the Agona East district of the Central region on Thursday experienced the shock of their lives when a 70-year-old man, Kofi Mawuli alias �Soogaa� butchered his wife, Yaa Agbeko. The heinous crime was perpetrated when Kofi Mawuli was on his way home from the farm with the wife and mother-in-law. Soogaa, a palm wine tapper, according to information, has six children with the wife and had no problem wife as at the time of the incident. The incident has become the talk of the town since some of them believe the man was under the influence of alcohol, hence such an evil act. Briefing the press at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital on Friday, Yaa Agbeko said around 4:00 pm on that fateful day, she went to the farm with the husband and her mother to carry out their normal farming activities. According to Yaa, after they had finished with what they were doing, they decided to take some foodstuffs to the house, so her husband helped her mother to carry her load and she (her mother) took the lead home while they followed. Yaa continued that on their way home, her husband begun butchering her at her back, a situation which compelled her to shout for help. She said her mother who heard her screaming also shouted for assistance, compelling the husband to run away. Some of the villagers later went to the scene and carried her to the Swedru Government Hospital for treatment where she was admitted. Yaa hinted that on Friday, her husband was on the farm to take some food-stuff to his hide-out when he was arrested by the villagers. According to her, her husband attempted to kill himself when he saw some of the villagers approaching but he was captured and sent to the Mankrong Junction Police Station for interrogation.Speaking to the nurse in charge at the female ward of the hospital, Margaret Donkoh said Yaa�s condition has stabilized but she would need to undergo a blood transfusion due to excessive loss of blood.
