Farmers urged to protect the environment from degradation

The Mfantseman Municipal Director of Agriculture, Mr Samuel Yorke has called on farmers to adopt good farming practices to protect the environment from degradation. Addressing a durbar to mark the 25th Farmers' Day Celebration at Mankessim, Mr Yorke advised them to also protect the environment in their quest to feed the nation. He said Ghana had made progress in agriculture and commended farmers and fishermen on their efforts. Mr Henry kweku Hayfron, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) advised farmers and fishermen to take advantage of the policies outlined by the government in its 2010 National Budget Statement, to step-up production, to generate more income. He said the Assembly was constructing a cold store facility at Kormantse for fishermen and that the Assembly was also in contact with some investors for establishment of pineapple and citrus processing factories in the Municipality to cater for the large produce in the area. The MCE said the Assembly would support individuals and groups who want to go into agriculture. Mr George Kuntu Blankson, Member of Parliament for Mfantseman East admonished farmers and fishermen to invest in their children's education for a better future. In all 28 farmers and fishermen were presented with prizes for excelling in their work. Mr Kofi Essel, 42, from Kobina-Ansa near Yamoransa was adjudged the overall best farmer and was presented with a corn-mill, Knapsack spraying machine and other items.
