Archbishop Emeritus Akwasi Sarpong Prays For President Akufo-Addo

There was a spot of attention at the final funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II on Thursday, when the Emeritus Archbishop of the Kumasi Diocese of the Catholic Church, Most Reverend Peter Akwasi Sarpong, went straight to President Akufo-Addo and hugged him, and after some pleasantries put his hands on his head and prayed for the President.

This was when President Akufo-Addo was on his way to the official dais after he had greeted Otumfuo.

The Octogenarian clergy was also leading a high-powered delegation of the clergy to also exchange pleasantries with the Otumfuo.

Since the president was taking his turn with the Asantehene, the clergy had been asked to wait, standing in the inner perimeter.

The Emeritus Archbishop had taken a seat in the inner perimeter whilst the other members of the clergy stood.

He was initially walking slowly because of his age but when he spotted the President coming in the midst of his security detail and protocol officers, he stood up, virtually abandoning his colleague ministers of the gospel and in a haste, almost wanting to run, he walked straight to President Akufo-Addo.

Some security men tried to restrain him from getting close to the President but realising that the Emeritus Archbishop was walking towards his direction, President Akufo-Addo also met him halfway, hugged him and after a few seconds of conversation bowed for the man of God to pray for him, putting his palm on the head of the President.

This attracted the attention of many of the mourners, especially the fact that the President bowed for a hand to be placed on his head for prayers.
