Ashaiman traders call for adherence to road map during relocation

Members of the Ashaiman Peace Traders Association (APTA) on Monday appealed to the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly to adhere strictly to the road map on the re-location of traders. The traders are to be relocated a new site at the Metro Mass Transit Terminal at Ashaiman. At a press conference at Ashaiman, members pledged their willingness not only to comply with the provisions of the road map, but to support the assembly in cash and kind to ensure a smooth and lasting de-congestion and re-location of traders within the municipality. According to APTA, the provisions of the road map include the fencing of the new market for security and safety; provision of electricity and warehouse; provision of washroom facilities; providing watchmen and security lights and the proper allocation of sheds. Mr James Mensah, Chairman of the Association said the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly should endeavour to give the de-congestion and re-location exercise a "human face for us to co-exist peacefully." He urged the assembly to desist from "the radical approach of using soldiers and police to harass us," and instead, resort to dialogue and consensus-building to undertake the exercise. Members, he said, would embark on a demonstration against the assembly on Friday, December 11, if their concerns were not addressed. Speaking to newsmen later, Numo Adinortey Addison, Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive, assured the traders that their concerns were receiving prompt attention, and that the assembly would provide the necessary facilities at the new site to ensure their smooth re-location.
