Committee for farmers' organizations network inaugurated

A nine-member executive committee for the Farmers Organisation Network of Ghana (FONG) was inaugurated at a general meeting in Techiman at the weekend. The committee, which has a two year term of office, has Dr King David Amoah as President, Hilarius Nubuake, First Vice President and Sarah Oforiwaa as Second Vice President. Other officers are Madam Esther Boakye, Secretary/Treasurer, Madam Abi Bisnab, Vice Secretary/Treasurer, Madam Comfort Tetteh, Co-ordinator, Mr Bismark Ampong, Youth Organiser and Madam Serwah Adusah, Women Organiser. About 60 delegates drawn from the middle belt of the country attended the ceremony. Dr Amoah explained that FONG was a network of farmer-based organisations including Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen, Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana and Ghana Federation of Agricultural Producers. He said FONG aimed at enhancing the capacity of member organisations and advocating for good and appropriate policies for the benefit of small-scale farmers and urged marketers, traders and producers of agricultural commodities to join it. Dr Amoah said the organization would establish a college to train the youth in modern agricultural practices to help improve the livelihood of farmers. Madam Tetteh asked members to educate other farmer-based organisations to patronize the activities of FONG and urged women not to regard agriculture as a preserve for men but to engage in it as full time occupation to improve their well being.
