President John Evans Atta Mills has warned that his administration would not tolerate the culture of impunity in any part of the country. He, has therefore challenged the security agencies to deal firmly with people who would take the law in their own hands, irrespective of their social or political standing.
The President said the culture of impunity had led to destruction of property and creation disunity. Speaking at a durbar of chiefs at Yendi, the traditional capital of Dagbon on Sunday, President Mills reiterated the government�s commitment to identifying and arresting the perpetrators of the heinous crimes in Yendi and Gushegu.
Some work had been done and soon all those involved in those criminal acts would be made to face the full rigours of the law, he said. The President emphasised that there could never be development without peace and asked the people to give peace a chance in order to enjoy the fruits of development.
President Mills mentioned development initiatives in the pipeline designed to transform the whole Northern Region into an economic hub but stressed that it could only be realised through peace and unity.
The Regent of Dagbon, Kampa-Na Abdulai Yakubu Andani, in his welcome address, appealed to the government to establish a teacher training college in Yendi, contending that many of the schools in the area were being manned by untrained teachers which accounted for poor academic performance of the students. The Regent also called for improvement in pipe-borne water supply in the area.
