Ghana Mine Workers Union To Picket Parliament Today

Members of the Ghana Mine Workers Union say they will match to Parliament tomorrow (Dec 14), to protest against the proposed retrenchment of workers of Goldfields Ghana Limited.

Speaking at a National Executive Council Meeting in Accra, the National Chairman of the Union, Kwarko Mensah Gyakari said the intended match is to draw the attention of the Legislature to the issue.

He called for the intervention of government and the Chamber of Mines on the matter since the action of the company is illegal.

Goldfields Ghana Limited said its decision to go into contract mining is due to the aging of its machinery and short lifespan of the mine which puts financial stress on the company.

The Ghana Mine Workers Union said its investigation into the claims proved otherwise. Mr. Mensah Gyakari added that all attempts to negotiate with the company proved futile.

The General Secretary of the Union, Prince William Ankrah, was not happy that mining companies were exploiting the regulatory lapses in the operation in the mining sector.

He entreated government to compel the companies to attend to the needs of the companies in their areas of operation.

Members of the National Executive Council of GMWU pledged their unflinching support for their colleagues of Goldfields Ghana Limited at Tarkwa.
