Cop Leads Robbery Gang

Four suspected armed robbers reportedly led by a police corporal, who allegedly attacked a supermarket at Nungua in Accra and stole money amidst sporadic gunshots, have been apprehended.

Three of the suspects were grabbed at Abbatoir, a police snap checkpoint, Tuesday night when they were reportedly escaping in a Toyota Corolla taxi with registration number GX 9514-13.

Corporal Raymond Amegashie, who is stationed at Tema Community 1 police station – believed to be the leader of the robbery gang – managed to escape arrest at the checkpoint that night.

However, he was later arrested at Tsopoli Barrier on his way to the Volta Region yesterday morning.

The others are Ibrahim Ayirebo, Bright Dorkanu and Stanley Akorli.

Items retrieved from them included GH¢19,500, US$600 and a pistol with six rounds of ammunition.

Two AK 47 assault rifles said to be in the custody of Corporal Amegashie were later recovered by the police.

It is believed that Corporal Amegashie, while escaping the previous night, went with some unspecified amount of money being proceeds from operations.
