H1N1 Influenza: Feel Free To Enjoy Pork

Dr Henry Bamfo Bonney, a leading Ghanaian specialist in infectious diseases working in Saudi Arabia has allayed fears of Ghanaians who are afraid to eat pork following the outbreak of H1N1 influenza in some Second cycle schools in the country.

The pandemic strain of H1N1 detected in some students of Kumasi Academy (KUMACA) and several Senior Hgh Schools across the country, is believed to be related to the unfortunate deaths of some of these students.

Relating the name; influenza type A, H1N1 2009 (swine flu) to pigs, some Ghanaians are allegedly afraid to eat pork (meat from a domestic pig)

However speaking in an interview to Kwami Sefa-Kayi on Peace FM morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Tuesday, Dr Bonney said ‘you can feel free to eat pork’ providing it is well cooked.

According to him, “pigs are more likely to get influenza from humans” than vice versa. “But they don’t fall sick; just a running nose…so you don’t have to kill pigs…you can eat pork; providing it is well cooked.”
