The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has cautioned the public, especially hawkers and traders to leave the pavements, footbridges and other ceremonial routes before January 8, 2018.
It said it would be conducting a decongestion exercise to rid the Metropolis of the activities of traders and hawkers since the Christmas festivities were over.
The warning was given in a statement signed by Mr Sam Ayeh-Datey, the AMA Coordinating Director and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday.
It said the continuous activities of the hawkers and traders was a contributory factor to the heaps of garbage deposited along the roads.
“The Assembly wishes to remind the public that, their activities are contrary to the AMA Hawkers By-laws of 2011 and Section 117(1) of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), and are punishable by law.”
The statement also admonished persons or group of persons who have illegally occupied government reserved lands and areas which the Assembly had previously cleared to vacate with immediate effect.
“Especially those along the Railway Line at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Avenor, parts of Dzorwulu and other areas within the jurisdiction of the AMA.
“Furthermore, the AMA wishes to emphasise that all those who are plying their trade along the Barnes road and the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue from the Old Kingsway to N.I.B illegally to vacate those areas with immediate effect,” it said.
The statement said the decongestion exercise would be spearheaded by the Metropolitan Security Committee and the focus areas would be the Central Business District, Kaneshie Market Area, N1 Highway, the Mallam-Achimota stretch, Darkuman-Kokompe, Odorkor-Kwashieman road, Nima Highway, Agbogbloshie, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and its environs.
It enjoined all to support the exercise to make Accra clean while wishing the citizenry a happy new year.
