Girl Burns Sister With Hot Iron

Afakoe Dayie, a 23-year-old woman who burnt her kid sisters face with a hot iron for passing the night outside, is now in the firm grips of the Dansoman Police Command. Afakome is said to have caused several burns on the victims body, including her face, after tying her neck with a rope in an attempt to strangulate her to death. She was arrested on December 7, 2009 after a teacher of the 13-year-old pupil of Mpoase Methodist Primary School, in Dansoman, led the young victim to lodge a complaint at the Dansoman Police Station. The suspect is said to have also accused her 13-year-old sister of stealing her money. Briefing Daily Guide, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service (DOVVSU), Chief Inspector Irene Oppong, said on December 7, 2009 the victims teacher ordered her to remove a pullover she was wearing in class because she was sweating. She obliged, leading to the discovery of blood stains in her uniform. When quizzed, the victim told the teacher that her older sister used a hot electrical iron to burn her body because she did not sleep at home the night before. The teacher said the little girl also claimed that her sister also falsely accused her of stealing her money. The suspect was said to have tied a rope around the neck of the victim in an attempt to kill her. The mark of the rope was drawn round the girls neck. According to Chief Inspector Oppong, the teacher, upon hearing the ordeal of the little girl, led her to the Dansoman police to lodge an official complaint, leading to the arrest of Afakome Dayie. The iron used in committing the crime has since been retrieved from the scene and is being kept as an exhibit at the police station. The suspect is expected to appear before court today.
