Nkwanta North are unable to access health insurance

People in the Nkwanta North District are unable to access the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) because there is no National Health Insurance (NHI) office in the district. The nearest NHI office is at Nkwanta in the Nkwanta South District that is difficult to reach from the Nkwanta North District because of the bad nature of the road in the area. As a result many people including the aged and lactating mothers have not registered with the scheme. The few people who were able to register are either unable to go for their cards or renew their registration. This came to light when Mr. Joseph Amenorwode, Volta Regional Minister, paid a working visit to the district on Tuesday. Mr. Daniel Yao Donkor, the District Director of Health Services, said in many cases people without the NHI cards were unable to pay for health services leaving debts at the health facilities. He therefore appealed to government to open an NHI office in the district as a matter of urgency to improve health care. Mr. Amenorwode said the government's plan was to bring health care to the door step of the populace and assured that an NHI office would soon be opened in the district.
