Ghana Hasn't Recorded 80% HIV Infection - Ghana AIDS Commission Disclaims

The Ghana AIDS Commission has dismissed reports that the Commission recorded 80 percent of HIV infections in the country last year.

The Commission, in a statement copied to Peacefmonline.com, indicated that the "2017 Ghana AIDS Commission Report has not yet been produced".

It further noted that the figures published by the media have caused confusion and panic, and therefore want the general public to be aware of the figures in the actual report of the Commission.

"The Ghana AIDS Commission recognizes that an 18% increase in new HIV infections is relatively high for a low HIV prevalent country like Ghana. Therefore, the Commission has put in place the right policies and strategies to reduce new HIV infections and expand treatment and care services for persons living with HIV (PLHIV)", the statement further read.

The Commission is urging the general public to ignore the figures in the media and "not to panic but take responsibility for self-protection and healthy lifestyles.

Ghanaians are also encouraged to test to know their HIV status and commence a life-saving antiretroviral treatment to check the infection.

"The Government of Ghana has prioritized HIV on the national agenda and is committed to making the achievement of the 90-90-90 strategy a reality as well as creating an enabling environment for the implementation of HIV and AIDS interventions in the country. To this end, the Government has set up a National HIV and AIDS fund which will ensure sustainable domestic funding for the HIV and AIDS response", the statement also indicated.
